The Holy Bible of Manson

A bible of all things Marilyn Manson.

Marilyn Manson and the Concept of Self-Mutilation
TW: Self-harm
By now Marilyn Manson has easily become a household name and is known, notoriously, for his self-mutilating acts on stage. Moreso in his earlier career than now.
Being commonly known as a “Shock Rocker” it comes to no surprise that Manson would follow in the previous footsteps of popular rockers such as Iggy Pop and decide to self-mutilate with whatever object he could find. Although it started to become quite prevalent in 1995 when touring with Danzig.
Musicians self-mutilating on stage was nothing new. In the backfold of Marilyn Manson’s autobiography, The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, it states that Manson has accumulated quite the significant amount of scars, ranging all over his body from his upper chest to his lower abdomen.
In the VHS tape, “Dead to the World” which is a compilation of several recorded performances from the famous 1996 tour, it shows Manson giving himself cuts with what appears to be a broken beer bottle. While he performs the song, “Apple of Sodom”, he appears to be dawning a red cape from the amount of blood that he has given out from the cutting.
When asked once in an interview about his self mutilation, Manson replied, “I was deep in the cavity of misery because Missi had called and said she wanted to end our relationship. The first relationship that meant anything to me.”
It is true that self-harm is associated with individuals who harbor some form of mental illness or experience periods of chronic sadness, so it’s not surprising to see Marilyn Manson state a broken heart as one reason for his self-mutilation.
Although Manson has also stated in regards to his self-harming acts, “It was a bit symbolic on one level. It’s the interaction between one person and alot of others who are listening to that person. Also to see people’s reaction’s and how it affects them. For me, to be on stage is an outlet to release all the emotions I’ve pent up all day, whether it be aggression or anything else I might be feeling that day. I tend to save all of that up, so it becomes real explosive.”
Marilyn Manson was a full transformation from a young and naive Brian Warner. He wanted to become it, to breathe it, feel it, be it.
Although many may find Manson’s notorious act of self-harming disturbing and not encouraging, Manson does make a valid point in stating that he did it for him and for nobody else.
